ABOUT ARTEF

THE SYSTEM OF WHITE SUPREMACY WAS NOT CREATED BY ANYONE WHO IS ALIVE TODAY. BUT IT IS MAINTAINED AND UPHELD BY EVERYONE WHO HOLDS WHITE PRIVILEGE."

LAYLA F. SAAD, ME AND WHITE SUPREMACY: HOW TO RECOGNISE YOUR PRIVILEGE, COMBAT RACISM AND CHANGE THE WORLD (2020).

The Anti-Racism Taskforce for European Film - ARTEF - has been created to tackle institutional racism in the European film industry.

In June 2020, a tsunami of anti-racism protests made us all acutely aware of the need to fundamentally address the issue of institutional racism in the world, around us in Europe -- and in particular for us in the European film industry.

As a group with over 30 heads of film institutions, associations, funds and industry members based in Europe (see a list of members below), we joined Dr Emilia Roig on a bi-monthly basis to undergo anti-racism awareness training as a first step aimed at eradicating structural and institutionalised racism in our industry.

We have now completed the foundational year of training as our first step of work towards change. The ARTEF's steering committee is currently working on next steps towards a longer-term strategy.
